A Day in Stockholm by Joakim Zander

Why go?

Because it is the most beautiful city in the world.

When to visit:

In the middle of bright summer or in the dead of winter.

Where to wake up:

Hotel Skeppsholmen. It will make you feel as if you are on an island in the archipelago visiting an affluent friend with impeccable taste. But if you turn your head, you have a view of the Royal Castle and the Old Town, and a ten minute walk will put you in the city center.

Where to eat breakfast:

I would eat at the hotel. Or if in the summer, get a take out coffee and sit on the stairs of the Royal Dramatic Theater and watch the boats.

The best tourist attraction to visit:

The Museum of Modern Art.

Where to eat lunch:

If you are out shopping, I would stop for a quick burger at Vigårda on Norrlandsgatan. Fast food with a serious twist delivered by star chef Melker Andersson.

A place to visit that only locals know:

The Stockholm City Library. One of the most beautiful buildings in Stockholm, designed in the 1920s by iconic Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund at the intersection of art noveau and functionalism.

A secret spot:

Maybe not so secret, but on a summer evening nothing beats drinks in the garden of Södra Teatern. Perched high on the cliffs of the south side of Stockholm it offers views and atmosphere you will find nowhere else.

Where to go for the evening:

If you have the opportunity to splash out: Dinner at Matthias Dahlgren’s Matbaren will give you a good sample of modern Scandinavian cuisine. For a slightly tighter budget I would go and barbeque my own meat at Nyfiken Gul

For cocktails I’d opt for Himlen (Heaven) on the 25th floor of what used to be the Swedish tax office on Södermalm. Unbeatable 360 degree views.

Local etiquette:

Never turn down an offer to skinny dip on your way home.
